Under the influence of digitization and globalization, the understanding of work is undergoing a fundamental transformation: the classic career and the concept of work as a nine-to-five job have had their day. “New Work” is the megatrend of our time and places people at the center of its alternative work concepts. But what does that actually mean and what role does this concept of work play for us at YourWork?
We take you on a journey into the world of New Work:
“Work in the future is the passion that pays for itself”[1] is how Charles Handy summed up the utopia of New Work more than 15 years ago. This vision is reflected in the transformation of the world of work through digitization, innovation and networking: from external determination to self-determination, from rigid processes to more flexibility, from wage earner to entrepreneur.
However, the reality still looks different. About 80% of all workers are dissatisfied in their job [2] and feel little connection to it. In our opinion, this should change! Since people spend a large part of their daily lives working, it should not only fill the household coffers, but also be something fulfilling and meaningful. Our job is one of the most significant ways to express who we are and what we care about[3].
Asked further: What is actually the meaning of work? The meaning of work is obvious – it describes our “doing”. When we look at the concept of meaning, things get more complicated. It may be more appropriate to speak of the “meaningfulness of work” and ask ourselves the following questions: What is the cause of my doing? What is my goal? What is the purpose of my work? People often answer such questions with the goal of happiness in life. Meaningful action and connection with people you love or are loved by are the hallmarks of a happy life for many. That’s why we aim to implement the concept of New Work in a way that connects people who love their work.
In the YourWork network, workers do not have to commit to one job title. Here, work is considered to be the sum of all people’s occupations in different phases of life. At YourWork, people ‘define’ themselves through their diverse activities or their work and share these with other people. Over time, exciting stories of the professional development of all users emerge, accompanied by pictures and videos. YourWork encourages people to both accept work or offer it. Anyone can create jobs, assignments, projects or other work offers and search for them at the same time. This creates countless new business potentials as well as multiple opportunities to build valuable, human working relationships.
YourWork wants to contribute to opening up the potentials of a modern working world for many people and to help shape the journey to New Work.
